Over the years, conflicts within many countries have contributed to increased number of international migrants. Many people have moved from their country of origin and moved to other peaceful countries with the aim of starting a fresh life.

Many countries with increased influx of migrants are the western countries like the US, United Kingdom, and Holland among others. These countries have been referred to by migrants as a safe haven where greener pastures are easy to find. Due to escalating number of migrants internationally, some countries have started putting measures with the aim of reducing the number of migrants getting into their countries.

As such, we have witnessed an increased number of human rights abuses and illegal detentions. As a result, many human and civil rights organization have been established to help protect the rights of migrants. Through these bodies, many migrants have been able to seek justice from wrong doing from state organs. Some of this organizations are governmental and non-governmental in nature.

United Nations has also taken a key interest in the treatment of human rights. The UN has been at the centre-stage of formulating international laws that govern the movement and protection of asylum seekers. The legislations made have been incorporated into the governing structures of many countries and government across the world given the international recognition of the body. In particular, the United States of America has witnessed increased number of human rights movement and organizations that have emerged in the recent years.

World Movement for Human Rights is one of the globally recognized activism body that has helped in the protection of people migrating from North and South America. The organization has outlined the basic tenets and rules that have helped the network to understand the lives of migrants and deal with them regardless of the country of origin.

The organization has developed a network that helps in tracking the country of departure and origin of many refugees and have documented evidence that helps them when finding a solution with authorities of countries regarding the refugees. The organization fights against impunity and perpetrators of violence as another important aspect of improving the lives of migrants.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are journalists that have contributed in the fight against the rights of migrants in the United States of America. They are the co-founders of Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media that have been at the center of advocating for change against the violation of human rights.

Their interest in the fight against violation of human rights came when they were arrested by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on October 18, 2007. This is because they revealed the existence of a grand jury that sought to use their stories about the Sheriff.

Lacey and Larkin appealed against the ruling and were compensated $3.75 million. They have in turn invested the money in the fight against human rights abuses.
